A North Korean ambassador has fled together with his family to South Korea. His name is Ryu Hyun-U. He was acting ambassador to North Korea in Kuwait.
Ryu arrived in South Korea in September 2019 and sought asylum, consistent with a report released on Monday (January 25th). But the news has been kept secret for therefore long. The news was published in South Korea’s top business newspaper Mail Business Daily, consistent with the Indian media ‘Times of India’.
Nearly 30,000 North Koreans have fled to South Korea to flee repression or poverty since the ruling Communist Party took office. However, most of the fugitives are civilians. it’s rare for such high-level diplomats to go away.
